Himalayan salt lamps are everywhere! I have seen them at Target, Whole Foods, and Urban Outfitters and I always am tempted to snatch one up for my apartment. But do they actually have benefits or are they just a fad? I did a little digging to see what the professionals say about them and here is what I found...
First off, what exactly are they and what do they claim to do? They are large chunks of Himalayan salt with a small bulb in the bottom of them for the most part. They claim to purify the air in your home, reduce allergies, and improve mood and sleep.
The science behind the negative ions they produce is pretty extensive and over my head for the most part, but basically these ions are similar to ones waterfalls and lightning storms produce, which purify the air. The negative ions the salt lamps puts out neutralizes the positive ions, (which come from electronics) which then allows you to sleep better, boosts your mood and also helps neutralize any allergens in your house.
In the end I found that these lamps may be more of an aesthetic than a health benefit, but they do still live up to what they claim to do, just not as much as some people would like. I am definitely going to give it a go and pick one up next time I see one.
